Peggy’s Pond/Rockefeller Dam, Plymouth (2024)

Rockefeller Dam was removed in August of 2024 by Vermont Farm and Wilderness. The dam was built in 1970 as a water supply and recreation pond, and was designated as a significant hazard posing a risk to the public and property downstream if it were to fail. After 7 years of planning and permitting the old 31-foot-tall 292-foot-long earthen dam was removed from the unnamed tributary that flows into Woodward Reservoir in Plymouth. This project reconnected 0.12 miles of river upstream and 1.5 miles downstream and helped improve water quality by reducing nutrient and sediment pollution and mitigating flooding.

We thank Vermont Farm and Wilderness and all of their partners for making this a successful project and helping this section of the tributary flow free once more.
