UVM Horticultural Farm Dam, South Burlington (2024)

In October of 2024 the University of Vermont removed a15ft high and 200ft long earthen dam on Bartlett Brook in South Burlington. Bartlett Brook is a headwaters stream and warm water fishery. The removal of the dam reconnected approximately 0.1 miles of upstream and 0.25 miles downstream and has helped improve aquatic habitat and water quality for this reach of river. The dam was located on the UVM horticultural farm and was once used as an agricultural water supply. The restoration replaced the old water supply pond with a functioning floodplain and restored the riparian area for carbon sequestration benefits, farm runoff filtration, and flood resilience. This project was made possible with institutional funds from UVM and funding from the State.
We thank UVM and their partners for making this a successful project and helping improve this section of Bartlett Brook.
